Last American Titanic Survivor Dies

Submitted by Ralph B. White

The Titanic community will be very sad to learn that the oldest Titanic survivor, the last American Titanic survivor, and the last person that actually remembered sailing on the great ship died Sunday, May 7, 2006 in Massachusetts. Lillian Asplund would have turned 100 years old had she lived until October. She lost her father and three brothers (one of them her twin) on Titanic. I think it sad and ironic that someone that suffered one of the greatest personal losses on Titanic was doomed to remember it the longest.

The funeral was held in Worcester, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon and she was buried in the Old Swedish Cemetery (now known as All Faith's Cemetery).

Now only Barbara Dainton (who will be 95 later this month(May-2006)) and Millvina Dean (94) are left.

Everyone has wondered what Lillian Asplund looked like as an older woman--her photo will be on the front page of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette tomorrow.
